Dickinson Elementary School

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Construction-Management

Story

This project began in Spring 2007 with a planned three-story academic building - a high-performance elementary school for students from Dickinson and Jefferson Elementary Schools.

The new elementary features 22 class rooms (including 6 group emphasis rooms) a cafeteria, gymnasium, library, media center, art room and a music room with a stage. The building’s hallways are shaped to serve as four multipurpose common areas encouraging ‘out of the class room’ group learning. Electronic security and card readers are also a feature of the facility.

The surrounding school grounds have been designed to offer children from the neighborhood a place to relax, play basketball or enjoy the new playground. The school building has been designed with a community focus - to fit into the neighborhood and continue its history.

This project included the demolition of an existing three story, 30,000 sq. ft. elementary building. Historic arches and keystone blocks from the old elementary were incorporated into the new facility.

An outdoor "historic arch" from the entrance of the old building welcomes the students as they walk to school.
